A slight departure from my normal TT posting because I couldn’t just pick one. I picked a pair of stable mates from Sapphire Hill. Both of these are from my recent trip to Sonoma. I recently re-tasted both of them. They were as good as remembered.
Sapphire Hill Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014. What a gem! This wine is one of the reasons I joined the Sapphire Hill wine club. Lovely, shimmering, translucent plum color with a pale pink rim. Nose is ripe summer fruit; blackberry, raspberry, strawberry & eucalyptus. Very inviting, it draws you in. The flavors don’t disappoint; cranberry, tart cherry, strawberry, an earthy note & just a wisp of oak. Silky tannins. Long, long spicy finish. Lovely long thin legs. A wonderful wine. 90 points IMHO.
Sapphire Hill Apostle 2013. This was one of my favorites from our Sonoma trip. Deep inky purple. The nose leaps from the glass with berry cobbler, baking spices, black tea & vanilla. Rich, fruit forward flavors follow suit. Bursting with dark fruit, blackberry, dark cherries, plums.with a solid tannin structure. Long, lingering, warming finish. 92 Points IMHO.
My only regret from the Sapphire Hill visit is that I did not buy more at the time, because they are all gone. My October allotment can’t come soon enough.
