Wednesday Wine Pick 🍷 Aglianico – pronounced ‘ah-YAH-nee-ko’. This was my first discovery of the aglicanico grape. Tenuta del Portale Starsa 2012. Upon opening, the nose was a bit musty so I gave it a two hour decant. It really opened up. Color is an opaque dark plum. Nose of dark fruit; blackberry, blueberry, eucalyptus and a floral note. But the nose must be coaxed out. Muted fruit flavors of raspberry, cranberry and tart cherry. A little dry with a higher acidity. The tannins are still a bit untamed. Medium long finish with herbal and sweet spice notes. The following day it was so much better, the fruit came out to play. Interesting and enjoyable. I give it 87 points IMHO. A nice wine for around $10.
